Trabajo sobre la historia política, sobre la historia íntima, sobre historia del arte, del cine y de los barrios.
Me interesa la historia que ha sido ignorada y desaparecida por las instituciones y los relatos oficiales. Hago pinturas, instalaciones, objetos, libros y videos repensando hechos históricos concretos que siento como claves para comprender y transformar la historia presente. Cada proyecto que emprendo trata de “cepillar la historia a contrapelo” en palabras de Walter Benjamin.
Me interesa indagar en la manera en que la historia se escribe, se documenta, se enseña o se exhibe. Para ello, trabajo a partir de archivos, revisión de prensa, novelas históricas, películas, diarios o álbumes familiares.
El trabajo de investigación en archivos es clave para la escritura de mis libros y para la construcción de mis proyectos artísticos, que al intentar reconstruir ciertos hechos históricos, quieren funcionar también como pequeños museos de historia en donde se muestren documentos y fotografías reales que algunas veces no han circulado públicamente.
Cuando decido que forma debe tomar cada proyecto trato de pensar en los medios de los que se han valido artistas para articular arte y política a través de la historia, de este modo experimento con la pintura, el grabado, el mural, el video y la instalación y decido que medio es mas apropiado dependiendo del tipo de historia y el tipo de documento con el que trabajo para cada proyecto específico.
Soy profesora Universitaria y he desarrollado proyectos de investigación y producción artística con grupos de estudiantes. En esos proyectos, la revisión de archivos y la reflexión en torno a la historia del arte, sirven como insumos para asumir decisiones y retos creativos.
He realizado también proyectos de investigación colectivos conducentes a publicaciones y curadurías.
Artist Statement
I am a visual artist and I live and work in Bogotá, Colombia.
I work on political history, intimate history, history of art, cinema and neighborhoods.
I am interested in the history that has been ignored and disappeared by institutions and official narratives. I make paintings, installations, objects, books and videos rethinking concrete historical events that I feel are key to understand and transform present history. Each project I undertake is about "brushing history against the grain" as Walter Benjamin would say.
I am interested in the way history is written, documented, taught or exhibited. I work from archives, press reviews, historical novels, films, diaries or family albums.
Research work is key for the construction of my artistic projects, which, in trying to reconstruct certain historical facts, also want to function as small history museums where real documents and photographs that sometimes have not circulated publicly are shown.
When I decide what form each project should take, I try to think about different ways artists have used to articulate art and politics through history, so I experiment with painting, engraving, mural, video and installation and decide which medium is more appropriate depending on the type of history and the type of document I am working with for each specific project.
I am a university professor and I have developed research and artistic production projects with groups of students. In these projects, the review of archives and reflection on history of art, serve as inputs to take decisions and assume creative challenges.
